A-Must-Visit Places in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Ibadan is the third most populous after Lagos and Kano, and the largest city in Nigeria by geographical size. Did you know? Ibadan homes about three million inhabitants.

It is a vibrant city of culture, history, and attractions. It is the site of the first television station in Africa, the home of Nigeria’s first university, the University of Ibadan, and Nigeria’s first skyscraper, Cocoa House.

Ibadan is a great place to explore, with stunning architecture, fascinating museums, and beautiful natural surroundings. Whether you are looking for a relaxing getaway or an exciting adventure, Ibadan has something for everyone. In this guide, I will be highlighting the top places to visit in Ibadan if you are a first-timer in Ibadan or you are a resident who doesn’t know where to hang out.

Are you as excited as I am? If yes, let’s begin with;

1. Cocoa House

As I have mentioned earlier, Cocoa House is the first skyscraper in Nigeria. Standing at 26 storeys high, the building has a height of about 105 meters.

Today, the building houses offices for major firms and broadcasting outfits with the last floor reserved for the Odua Museum and Hall of Fame which was commissioned by Professor Wole Soyinka in 2013. Personally, I have been to the museum, and trust me, you will be wowed. It embodied so much of the Yoruba history from pre-colonial era to modern society. It is a great place to learn about the history of Nigeria and Yoruba people,

It is located in Dugbe area, Ibadan.

2. Mapo Hall

This is the oldest building in Ibadan and Nigeria at large. Mapo Hall is a colonial building and it is the official city hall of Ibadan and Oyo state. This ancient hall is located in the center of Ibadan and is visible from almost every part of the city.

Mapo Hall has become a symbol of love, strength, and unity. Did you know? Mapo Hall was built by a Wellish Engineer named Robert Taffy Jones. Most people pass by Mapo Hall but not so many people have explored its amazing beauty.

It is located in Oje area, Ibadan.

3. IITA Forest Reserve

IITA is an award-winning, research-for-development (R4D) organization, providing solutions to hunger, poverty, and the degradation of natural resources in Africa. What you do not know about IITA Forest Reserve is that it has very beautiful scenery, where you can hang out with your friends and loved ones.

This is a great place to explore nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Did you know? The forest has over 200 bird species and over 220 butterfly species. If you visit Ibadan or live in Ibadan, you should visit IITA.

It is located between Ojoo and Moniya town, Ibadan

4. Agodi Gardens

This is the most popularly known garden in Ibadan. It is a great place to engage in different forms of activities. It is also known as Agodi Botanical Gardens. The serene and calm garden has a mini zoo, lush gardens with different types of vegetation, and water parks. It has facilities such as a swimming pool and play area for children and space for picnics. The garden is open to visitors throughout the week.

5. University of Ibadan, Zoological Gardens

As I mentioned earlier, the University of Ibadan is the first university in Nigeria. The university houses the popularly known UI Zoo. The zoo is a part of the zoology department and was established in 1948 when the school was built. The zoo boasts tens of well-fed wild animals.

You will find animals like lions, crocodiles, tortoises, snakes, etc. The garden is also known for its luxuriant green grass and calming atmosphere. Did you know? A picnic can be held in the zoo.
